painting intimate
I paint small paintings because they are often more intimate, more critical and less
decorative, inviting a closer look which reveals the subtlest gesture. The surface and
the hand that made them are as closely married to their meaning as the image itself.
For me, small paintings invite an intense engagement with my materials and an
opportunity for excess in both paint and subject matter. Small paintings are capable of
shouting across a large room but also of whispering quietly in your ear.
